The danger of Medium
We all love Medium, we pay to use it because we love it. But what we read is decided by the algorithm, and that is scary.
In facts, how Medium really work ? At the opening of our accounts we have declared what we want to read. And after the algorithm learned about us to suggest the articles we will love, and we love that !
But, by following this algorithm, we are, in reality, falling into a branch of medium, we only read articles that gave one point of view, our point of view. I am an apple lover, for the first day I have created my account I never seen an article about Samsung, while, I am pretty sure there are plenty of articles about the last Galaxy S21. In this case it is just tech, but now, imagine : if medium only suggest me articles about apple, it can also understand that I am Democrat and so i will only see articles pro-Democrat, and zero articles about Republicans. And by this way, my beliefs concerning Republicans will become stronger every day.
We can now dig into this phenomenon. It is called politic hooliganism, and it’s really scary. In particularity, this is the phenomenon that leads to incidents like the Capitol one, because people is locked into one idea, one point of view, and thus leads to extremism, and finally this become a threat for our democratic governments. In a world were democracies are losing field to profit to autocratic systems, we must be aware of this kind of phenomenons.
So I please you to be aware of this phenomenon in order to prevent you and your entourage from becoming a politic hooligan. I think read press articles from different sources which are way different in their positioning on the political chessboard is the best way to avoid the polarisation of your political ideas in the extreme of the political chessboard. In addition, this is, I think, a great opportunity to enlarge you mind and discover other ideas, and so sharpen your criticism, by arguing for your original ideas against the news ideas your discover.
Consequently, not only you are circumventing a terrible phenomenon that is a threat to the democracy, but also you are bettering your mind and your arguing skill, that is really important in our today’s world.
